FAQ: How do I get my fingerprints taken if I'm not a CA resident?

How do I get my fingerprints taken if I'm not a CA resident?

If you live outside of California, you will have to submit your fingerprints directly to the DRE.

Here are the steps you should take to submit your fingerprints:

  • The DRE will send you an FBI Applicant Fingerprint Card along with your license application.
  • Get your fingerprints taken (by completing the FBI Applicant Fingerprint Card) at a local law enforcement agency.
  • Mail the FBI Applicant Fingerprint Card to the DRE, along with your license application.
  • You must include a $49 fingerprint processing fee, plus the $245 license application fee.

If you wish to get your fingerprints taken before the DRE mails you a fingerprint card (which you will receive with your license application, after passing the state exam), you can request a blank fingerprint card by calling the Licensing Section of the DRE at (877)373-4542.
